Back to Antenna in Hampton Roads, still need assistance

OK, finally cut Direct TV, back to the antenna - and the same issues still requiring assistance before I go too far down the wrong path. Here are the details:

Antenna: Wingard HD 7015, rooftop mounted

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...5b94c5aa15162b

When I dropped DTV I used their cables to hook the antenna into. I have one (new) splitter running to three lines, two upstairs one downstairs. Problem channels:

Fox 43: good on upstairs TV closest to the antenna, in and out on the other upstairs, and nothing downstairs
WAVY 10: Nothing on any of the three
Sky TV: Was good before, nothing now on any of the three
VEC 13 (ABC): Good upstairs, freezes downstairs.

So, is it possible to push stronger signals downstairs or to individual TVs; do I need to look into raising it (will have to hire someone - jumped out of planes for a while in the Army, but not real fond of heights, go figure); would a rotator work to fine tune (would think so since upstairs seems to be working much better save WAVY); an attenuator (someone mentioned this a few years ago before I went to DTV, again though, one for the entire setup)?

Thoughts anyone? (And please, no editorials on sports or any other comments about what I should or should not be watching. I like sports.)

Thanx.

The signal strengths are strong at your reception location , should be no problems with reception.

Most likely is Bad coax and Bad connections and Bad couplers and splitters.

-----------------

To Prove Reception.

Replace the matching transformer (balun) that connects the antenna to the coax with a New matching transformer.

Connect a New coax to the matching transformer and run the New coax through a open door or window in to the house to a good location where a New 3 way splitter can be connected.

And 3 New coaxes are connected to the New 3 way splitter and run the 3 New coaxes to each Tv.

Just run them through the house to the Tv's.

--------------------

Digital Tuners can develop -Digital Glitches- that are not cleared out with simple channel scans.

To clear tuners do Double Rescans.

http://www.wchstv.com/DoubleReScanAlert.pdf.

--------------------

Also to Prove Reception , aim antenna at about 180 degree magnetic compass direction.

Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html.

Use a Real and Actual magnetic compass to aim antenna.

--------------------

Also , As Always , trees and tree leaves , plants and plant leaves , have a Negative Effect on Broadcast Tv Reception and so do buildings and other obstructions including your own roof and building.

Some and not all Negative Effects are.

Absorbing and Blocking Reception.

Multi-Path Reflecting Tv Signals Bouncing All Around.

The Best Practice for Reliable Reception is to install the antenna at a location that has the least amount to no amount of obstructions of any type or kind in the directions of reception including your own roof and building.

The directions of reception at your location are , South West , South , South East.

---------------------

What is reception like now??

Hi Wolfpack7,

Some thoughts:

1. Is your antenna pointed to magnetic heading 195?

2. What are your surroundings? (trees, etc.)

3. What is your coax run length?

4. Is your splitter non-amplified? If no, see below.

An early test I'd perform is to add a 4 port distribution amplifier. http://www.amazon.com/Channel-Master.../dp/B001PI09SE. What these do is offset signal losses from splitting and coax runs. You are in a unique situation to see what being closer to the antenna coax-wise manifests in reception. It is much more stable.

Generally, more than 2 splits aren't advised without a distribution amp.

What is the shape of your coax? You have a very nice TVfool report. You ought to have a reasonably nice slam dunk.

Stephanie, thanx.

Going to try the distribution amp first - really don't like heights.... If that doesn't clear it up will try to fine tune the direction.

Cable is in good shape, it's all original and built into the house with the exception of the one leading to the set upstairs with the best reception. That's (mostly) indoors as well, only outside long enough to gain access to the attic.

Thanx again, I appreciate the assistance - will re-post after Amazon sends me the part.

Stephanie, thanx. Amplifier works great, pulling 1080 on the channels missed before, so don't have to mess with the roof! Thanx again.
