Everyone was so helpful with my setting up the new antenna on Grand Island NY. I have a friend here from Philadelphia who I am trying to convert to cut the entertainment package on her Cable. Here is her location report.

All indications are that a set top antenna would be sufficient. Suggestions on what might be the best set top in her situation. Her TV is too far from the windows to use a leaf type.

This would be a no brainer except for the fact that WPVI, ABC is
on Rf channel 6 and WHYY, PBS is on Rf channel 12. I do not
know of any indoor antenna that would consistently be able to
receive those two channels. The Antennas Direct indoor models
probably have the best chance of success. An attic mounted or
outdoor antenna would likely ensure good reception on all
channels.......

Try something like this antenna from Walmart. It's under $10 and returnable. Easy experiment.

Of course, the problem with set top antennas is that they are subject to interference by things inside the house, like people and walls and the stuff in them. But it would be a great experiment, as it could give good enough results for the person to consider investing in a more suitable attic or outdoor antenna.

I think the antenna that Jake recommended, which has a VHF
dipole, might just work.... Keep your receipt!
If it doesn't work properly, you might consider the Clearstream
2Max. It also has VHF dipoles and you just might be able to
hide it under a wall hanging or even picture!!!!

I would concentrate on the attic. The Winegard HD7000R is one option.

Note that the VHF dipole on the Antennas Direct models is optimized for high band VHF. It is not likely to work for WPVI.

There is no attic space in this row house. Also no roof top access that a 67 year old would want to try gaining access. If there was a crawl space I would try that the next time I go there.

I realize this may be a bit late, but I was just in the Lansdale area yesterday and I had a slapped together, UHF only, with only the elements gray hoverman and it was able to snag not only physical channels 6 and 12, but it also picked physical channel 2 as well. All of which was done on the ground floor in a stone house. So, I would imagine that just about anything designed for VHF would pick up those channels. I hope this helps, and good luck.

Thanks, your reply is not too late and I will need to try options when next I visit her. At this point she is paying for cable on a very limited budget not willing to try the OTA. I thought when I go see her in 2018 I would stop by walmart and buy an antenna and a flag pole. I could install it from the 2nd story bedroom window and try it on her 2nd floor master bedroom tv to show her the option of cutting that high cost cable bundle.
