Antenna question

I'm trying to see if I can use an OTA antenna for local networks. Here is the TV Fool report for my location: http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...8e038c6296d23f. I figure I'll need an outdoor model, due to the distance and trees obstructing the LOS. I have a 2 story house and could mount one on the roof, but it's not possible to get above the trees. There is no magic antenna that will see through trees. If you can't find a clear path for a Winegard HD7694P antenna aimed at 170 degrees magnetic, sign up for cable or satellite.

No preamp needed.

Rabbit73, thanks for replying, but I'm not looking for magic, just a serious suggestion. I doubt there's a clear line of sight anywhere outside of Arizona. I'm about 45 miles from local transmitters, my house is surrounded by oaks, and I'll try an antenna regardless, I just need to know which one might give me the best chance. I'd appreciate any real ideas, not ' sign up for cable or satellite'.

I don't want to get your hopes up or waste your money, but if you want to try with no guarantees:

in increasing magnitude order:

Winegard HD7698P + Channel Master 7778

You have some strong local FM signals that might interfere with TV reception; use an FM trap. The 7778 has one built in. Without an amp insert an FM trap in the coax. See attachment.

The coax shield should be grounded with a grounding block that is connected to the house electrical system ground with 10 gauge copper wire for electrical safety and to reject interference. For further compliance with the electrical code (NEC), the mast should also be grounded in a similar manner to drain any buildup of static charge, but the system will not survive a direct strike.

Rabbit73, thank you the detailed information! Now I have something to work with, I'll be putting it together soon. It may not work, but I'm going to try. I find it hard to believe that the move from analog to digital signal has actually made it more difficult to receive ota, but that seems to be the case. I very much appreciate your help!

The FCC made their decisions about transmitter power using the assumption that everyone would have an outdoor antenna at 30 feet AGL. They have now found it necessary to authorize transmitter power increases to obtain the same coverage area as analog.

Analog signals fade gradually, and we can tolerate a little snow. Digital signals suddenly drop out at the "Digital Cliff." It's pretty much all or nothing.
