The DB8e should have a bit more gain. It was engineered with the new UHF band in mind. Older designs had to cover UHF CH-14 to CH-69. Since the FCC reduced the UHV TV band to CH-14 to CH-51, the new design can squeeze a bit more gain out because it doesn't need to cover as wide a range of frequencies.
Still the difference is not extreme, about 2 dB.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
