Lokking for Antenna suggestions/advice

I just moved into a new house and I'd like to try and go without cable, but definitly need my locals. The previous owner had dish network, so my thought process was to remove the dish itself and mount an antenna to the dish pole on the roof. The dish has 3 coax lines coming from the eye into the house which go into a a dish network splitter, I figured I could use one of those lines to feed the antenna into the house, then run that line into my own splitter to feed my three tv's, bypassing that dish network splitter.

I know nothing about antennas so was looking for some suggestions on what to buy. My tvfool report is here:
http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...c84ff0ce25d8d8

Most of the channels I care about are within about 30 miles (NBC,CBS,ABC,FOX) although it would be sweet to pick some of the 65 mile channels (CBC out of Canada.)

Not sure what equipment I might need (amp etc) or if somehow using the dish network roof pole and coax are impractical.

Thanks for your help!

Your location has a good shot at receiving All of the receivable Digital Tv USA channels in the Green and Yellow reception zones of the tvfool report plot and channel list.

And the Canada Digital Tv stations , the CBC and several other Canada Digital Tv stations/channels in the red reception zone of tvfool radar map and channel list.

With 1 Winegard HD7696P antenna and a Antennas Direct CPA-19 preamp.

Install the HD7696P antenna and CPA-19 preamp above the roof in such a manner that the roof and house are not blocking reception to the , north west , west , south , south east.

Aim the HD7696P antenna at about 305 degree magnetic compass direction.

Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html.

As always , the starting aim direction of a antenna is the --> starting aim direction.

The aim direction can be adjusted , the antenna can be moved up and down and the antenna be relocated to find better reception if required.

Directional Tv antennas receive the best at the front of the antenna then the front angles to the antenna and to a lesser degree at the back angles and back of the antenna.

Most Digital Tv's have a signal strength meter and some digital Tv's have a signal quality meter.

Here are some antenna mounts , http://www.ronard.com/909911.html if using the tripod mount use the 5 foot antenna mount , http://www.ronard.com/34424560.html if using the eave mount use the #4560 , http://www.ronard.com/ychim.html , http://www.ronard.com.

Buy the ronard antenna mounts at solidsignal by typing the word ronard in the solidsignal search box or buy from ronard.

Here are some places to buy antennas and etc. , http://www.solidsignal.com , http://www.amazon.com , http://www.winegarddirect.com.

If 1 Tv is connected use no splitter.

If 2 Tv's are connected use a , HFS-2D , 2 way splitter.

If 3 Tv's are connected use a , HFS-3D , 3 way splitter.

Buy the HFS splitters at , http://www.solidsignal.com , or , http://www.hollandelectronics.com.

As always , trees and tree leaves do a real fine job of reducing or blocking Digital Tv reception and so do buildings and other obstructions including your own roof and house.

It is best locate the HD7696P antenna at a location that has the least amount to no amount of of obstructions of any type or kind in the directions of reception including your own roof and house.

The Tv/s Must Channel Scan for the Digital Broadcast Tv Channels , often named the 'Air Channels' or 'Antenna Channels' in the Tv setup menu because the Tv transmission travel through the air from the transmitting antenna to the receiving antenna.

Some Digital Tv's will automatic channel scan for cable Tv channels.

Go into the Tv setup menu and select , 'Air Channels' / 'Antenna Channels'.

DO NOT Channel Scan For Cable Tv channels.

Do not use the satellite system hardware , diplexers , splitters , amplifiers , power injectors , power supply etc. .

It is Ok to use the satellite system coax to get the antenna reception from point A to point B of the coax that outside or inside of the house.

To go after your locals, the existing sat hardware is fine to use since it's inactive now. The mount is likely is a place that provides a decent view of the broadcast towers. I would think you could pick up those channels using a small antenna like the ANT-751. Your stations to the west are closer that the group from the south, so you'd have to try to find a sweet spot in between. I'd start pointing it SSW and go from there. The 751 has a wide angle of reception over a short range for both UHF & VHF. Of course, be sure and scan for antenna channels on your TV as you make adjustments.

As for the Canadian stations, you'll need a separate larger antenna, like a Winegard HD7698, pointed right at 331 deg, by your compass.

You cannot connect the two antennas to the same coax. Separate runs are required, which sounds like you have them. You'll have to use an A/B switch to change between them unless you have dual coax input on the TV. You'll need a separate mount for the 2nd antenna as there's not enough distance on that sat mount for two. If mounted too close to each other, one can cause reception issues for the other.
