Need some recommendations

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...cc4997c5865ba2

Existing antenna I have is this unit: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-SDV294...hilips+antenna It's currently not functioning because my 2 year old managed to break the power inserter. It was mounted on the south facing side of the roof and we didn't get the best reception with it (i'm assuming cuz the signal had to go through the roof since it's on the south facing slope of the roof)

Would like to get the best reception for the major networks including PBS and any others within reason.

QUESTIONS:
I need some recommendations on what antenna to buy and where to place it and what direction.
Any good recommendations on mounting without damaging the roof would be great. (do I have to mount on the roof?) Thanks for the help!

A Simple reception situation.

Looking at the Current Plus Pending Applications Included Digital Tv stations/channels of the tvfool radar report and channel list.

For reliable reception I recommend install a Winegard HD7000R antenna Above The Roof aimed at about 80 degree magnetic compass direction.

Install the HD7000R antenna in a manner that the roof or house is not blocking reception to the , north east and east and north west.

Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html.

Here are some antenna mounts , http://www.ronard.com/909911.html use the #911 5 foot tripod , http://www.ronard.com/34424560.html use the #4560 eave antenna mount , http://www.ronard.com/ychim.html , http://www.ronard.com.

Buy the ronard antenna mounts at solidsignal by typing the word ronard in the solidsignal search box.

The tripod antenna mount is the one that mounts on the top of the roof surface , it comes with tar pitch pads that go under the feet and seal out water.

The eave mount and chimney mounts do not install to the top of the roof surface.

Here are some places to buy antennas and etc. , http://www.solidsignal.com , http://www.amazon.com , http://www.winegarddirect.com.

A preamplifier is not required.

For 1 Tv connected use no splitter.

For 2 Tv's connected use a common simple 2 way splitter.

For 3 Tv's connected use a common simple 3 way splitter.
______

As always , trees and tree leaves do a real fine job of reducing or blocking Tv reception and so do buildings and other obstructions including your own house.

It is best to install the HD7000R antenna at a location that has the least amount to no amount of obstructions in the directions of reception including your own house.

The Tv/s Must Channel Scan for the Digital Broadcast Tv Channels , some times named the 'Air Channels' or 'Antenna Channels' in the Tv setup menu because the Tv transmissions travel through the air from the transmtting antenna to the receiving antenna.

DO NOT channel scan for cable tv channels.

Digital Tv tuners can develop - Digital Glitches - that are not cleard out with a simple channel scan , do a Double Rescan.

http://www.dtv.gov/rescan.html.

New digital Tv channels can begin transmitting with no prior notice so it is a good idea to channel rescan from time to time.

This web site shows that K33CO UHF channel 33 is to begin transmitting , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luken_Communications.

THanks so much for the detailed reply. Are there any good links for installing the antenna? I've heard that it's a good idea to ground the antenna. Any more info on that?

It sounds like you are going to install the antenna yourself.

Rather than sending you off to look at generic install tutorials, a description of your house and the roof or wall on which you plan to mount on would help us offer specific suggestions for the type of hardware and techniques that would work best for you.

Yes, grounding is a good idea, it's usually just a few of the steps, no harder or complicated than the rest of a typical installation.

You can post photos if you think that will help us better understand your situation.

Ok: So I went on the roof again and examined what I already have. It appears as if the placement of the satellite will be OK to mount the new antenna from. Does the antenna come with mounting hardware to attach to a mast? Also what else do I need to purchase for the grounding equipment? I have a cable running where I need it but I'm pretty sure it's not grounded ATM.

Antennas such as the HD7000R do include a clamp mechanism to fasten to a mast.

http://forum.tvfool.com/showthread.php?t=901 ends with a summary of how to ground a TV antenna system.

Typically, if the sat dish was professionally installed, they likely used coax with a ground lead attached. But it would be obvious to you, I'm sure.
