No channels

We recently bought a new samsung hdtv after giving my 32 dynex hd to my son. We have a larger samsung in the living room and this one is in our bedroom. We have a 20 year old antenna that we are able to get 3 channels with on both the samsung in our living room and the dynex in our bedroom. When we hooked up the new samsung it will not pick up any channels. Does anyone know why this new tv will not pick up channels? Should we buy a hd antenna? The other tv's are both about 4 years old so I was wondering if they changed the tuner in this newer tv to only work with a hd antenna.

Your description makes me question whether the new TV has been set to 'air' or 'antenna' mode in the setup menu. Most TVs default to 'cable' mode. Some now have an 'auto' setting, but if 'air' or 'antenna' is an option, use it instead of auto.

Please consider posting a link to your TV Fool report. We will be able to offer advise about antennas once we know what signal conditions are like at your location. http://forum.tvfool.com/showthread.php?t=4

The following is a Teleview recommendation for broadcast Tv reception.

The Tv can have a defective tuner.

The tvfool radar report is 10 feet antenna height.

Please make 3 more tvfool radar plot reports at , 25 , 40 , 60 , feet antenna heights.

To see if more Tv stations channels are receivable with a higher antenna.

I asked Samsung about a bad tuner. They said they could send someone to check it and if it is bad it would be covered under warranty but if there is no problem they would charge us to have it checked.

Here are the links for a higher antenna.

->ALL<- Questions and Answers about Broadcast Tv Reception and More.

The following is a Teleview recommendation for broadcast Tv reception.

As often happens in multipul hilly country the signal strength of the weak signal strength Tv stations does not improve with higher antenna heights.

For your reception situation , 10 feet or less antenna height looks like the best for reception.

The Digital Tv stations/channels to the east.

WQMY , REAL UHF channel 29 , MyNetwork and FOX and CW. Strong signal strength.

W20AD-D , REAL UHF channel 20 , ABC and Antenna Tv. Weak signal strength.

WBRE-DT , REAL VHF channel 11 , NBC. Weak signal strength.

WYOU-DT , REAL VHF channel 13 , CBS. Weak signal strength.

If you will like to try for the weak Tv stations that are listed above.

Install a Winegard HD7698P antenna with a Antennas Direct CPA-19 preamp , aimed at about 96 degree magnetic compass direction.

Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html.

The aim and height of the antenna will most likely require adjustment for best reception.

For 1 Tv connected use no splitter.

For 2 Tv's connected use a , HFS-2D , 2 way splitter.

For 3 Tv's connected use a , HFS-3D , 3 way splitter.

Buy the HFS splitters at , http://www.hollandelectronics.com , or , http://www.solidsignal.com.

Here are some places to buy antennas and etc. , http://www.solidsignal.com , http://www.winegarddirect.com , http://www.amazon.com.

As always , trees and tree leaves do a real fine job of reducing or blocking Tv reception and so do buildings and other obstructions.

It is best to locate the antenna at a place that has the least amount to no amount of obstructions of any type or kind.

The Tv/s Must Channel Scan for the Digital Broadcast Tv Channels , sometimes named the 'Air Channels' or 'Antenna Channels' in the Tv setup menu because the Tv transmissions travel through the air from the transmitting antenna to the receiving antenna.

Do not channel scan for cable tv channels.

->ALL<- Questions and Answers about Broadcast Tv Reception and More.

The following is a Teleview recommendation for broadcast Tv reception.

The South West group of digital Tv stations/channels.

As a Test of reception of the 1 strong Digital Tv station and the other weak Digital Tv stations.

WHVL-LD , REAL UHF channel 27 , MyNetwork and America One.

WATM-DT , REAL UHF channel 24 , ABC and FOX and This Tv.

WTAJ-DT , REAL UHF channel 32 , CBS.

WPSU-TV , REAL UHF channel 15 , PBS.

Aim the HD7698P antenna system at the south west group of tv stations at about 230 degree magnetic compass direction.

Rescan for the Digital broadcast Tv channels.

If the digital Tv stations/channels are received and you will like to continus to receive them.

Turn the HD7698P antenna system back around to the east.

And for reception of the south west group of Digital Tv stations/channels install a HD9095P antenna with a CPA-19 preamp , aimed at about 230 degree magnetic compass direction.

For 1 Tv connected use no splitter.

For 2 Tv's connected use a , HFS-2D , 2 way splitter.

For 3 Tv's connected use a , HFS-3D , 3 way splitter.

The 2 Tv antenna systems ate Not connected together on to 1 coax.

The 2 SEPARATE antenna systems are separate all the way to the locations of the Tv's and the 2 separate antenna systems are connected to a Remote control A/B antenna coax switch at each Tv location.

Here are the Remote control A/B antenna switches , http://www.radioshack.com , # 15-1968 , or , http://www.mcmelectronics.com , 32-4425 .

prior reception?

Have you swapped out the coax to the wall? It's possible it got damaged during the swap? What if you connect it to the outlet that feeds the working TV? IMO, you need to verify the signal is good at the outlet before you try to diagnose the TV.

We bought a new cable thinking that maybe the cable got damaged as we were switching TV's (since it did work on the old TV) but that didn't work. Hopefully tonight we can try the TV downstairs where we know for certain it is working. We have been planning to do that but did not get chance yet. We also looked at this antenna but did not know if it was a good choice.

ClearStream 2 Long-Range HDTV Outdoor Antenna.

Don't know how it compares to the one recommended in the post above.

The channel scanning looks straight forward , selection of antenna or cable channels or automatic.

I am not there to check it out , I suspect the tuner is bad , return the Tv to store.

Or a external tuner can be used.
