Looking for some orientation help in Toronto

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. I have had all my parts for a while now and I’m just about to finally make the push to get it installed.

After some research, I ended up picking up a Channel Master 4221HD. I am planning on installing it on the chimney of my two story house in Toronto.

TVFool Link: http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...cc49ac971e0c60

Since the installation will be tricky (height), I was looking for some guidance on where to point the antenna before I climb up there.

Setup: Channel Master 4221HD. The cable will go directly to the TV (with the only breaks being at the grouding block, and the wall jack). No splitters or distribution. Total length: ~45/50’ (?).

Channels I would like to get: I would like to get the US channels out of Buffalo (NBC, CBS, PBS, ABC, and FOX) but also the Canadian channels off the CN Tower.

The issue: I have created the image below. It shows my home at the center, the trajectory of the Toronto stations and Buffalo stations and the location of several high rise apartment buildings (~22 stories) and the approximate distances from my house. You can see that the Buffalo trajectory intersects the buildings.

Thanks!

I recommend 2 antennas.
_______________________

Antenna system #1.

For reception of the Canada Digital Tv stations/channels aim a Winegard HD7696P antenna at about 250 degree magnetic compass direction.

Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing.html.

Install the HD7696P antenna in such a manner that the roof or house is not blocking reception to the south west.

Antenna system #2.

For reception of the USA Digital Tv stations install a Channel Master CM4228HD antenna aimed at about 165 degree magnetic compass direction.

Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html.

Install the CM4228HD antenna in such a manner that the roof and house are not blocking reception to the south east.

Install the HD7696P antenna on the bottom and the CM4228HD on top separated by about 3 feet.

Antenna systems 1 and 2 are Separate antenna systems and will not be connected on one coax.

2 Separate coaxes will go to the location of the Tv and connect to a Remote control A/B antenna coax switch. http://www.mcmelectronics.com , 32-4425.

Saveandreplay has the same Remote control A/B antenna coax switch.

A/B antenna switching is Channel Surfing Friendly , press the button on the hand held remote control . change antennas and Keep On Channel Surfing.

Here are some places to buy antennas and etc. , http://www.saveandreplay.com , http://www.trentondistributors.com , http://www.amazon.ca , http://www.solidsignal.com , http://www.amazon.com , http://www.winegarddirect.com , http://www.channelmasterstore.com.

__________

As always , trees and tree leaves do a real fine job of reducing or blocking Digital Tv reception and so do buildings and other obstructions including your own house.

It is best to install antennas at a location that has the least amount to no amount of obstructions of any type or kind in the directions of reception including your own house.

The Tv Must Channel Scan for the Digital Broadcast Tv Channels , sometimes named the 'Air Channels' or 'Antenna Channels' in the Tv setup menu because the Digital Tv transmissions travel through the air from the transmitting antenna to the receiving antenna.

DO NOT channel scan for cable tv channels.

Falling off the roof is very close to zero fun , do not do it.

I see the bus station and the high rises on google maps.

Make sure you can return the CM4228HD.

Thanks for the response. I guess I didn't do the best research when picking the 4221HD.

For the Buffalo stations, It seems that you are suggesting that I point the antenna where I am supposed to, neglecting the fact that there are buildings in line. I guess this is still the best orientation and I'm far enough away that I'm hoping for a reduced effect (?).

I hadn't really thought about getting two antennas so this might end up being a job for the spring. I'm going to have to look at the total height of the mast since I would want 3' between them. I might have to settle for US-only at the end of the day.

One thing I noticed about switching from cable to antenna is that the channel rescanning takes a while. If I add another antenna then wouldn't I need to run the rescan every time I switch antennas?

Perhaps a lengthy rescan is just unique to my crappy tv.

You can test reception with the 4221HD.

The USA Tv Stations will be the hardest to receive because the big buildings are in the way.

The Canada Tv stations will be easier to receive.

Most Digital Tv's have a feature that allows to scan for channels and then scan for more channels without losing the first channels.
Or a way to add channels without losing channels.

Read the owners manual that came with the Tv or read the owners manual on the internet.
