ota newbie thats tired of directv

Guys below is my tvfool report I would like to pull channels all the way down to abc 40.1. So most likely here we will be going with an attic install or outside install I would prefer attic so I don't have to deal with HOA. I would like to ask what needs to be done in order to pull ABC I hooked up a cheap RCA 10.00 antenna and pulled everything in decent quality but could not grab ABC; also I would like suggestions on what model of antenna to purchase and last of all what all tools are needed to pull this off? I asume I need a compass and a signal meters that can determine how much signal you are brininging in on a given channel and the quality of that signal.

First off, search this forum for "HOA". You'll find they have no power over you installing a reasonable TV antenna.

That said, you will need an antenna that's able to pull in UHF & VHF, as you have some channels on the VHF-Lo side of the spectrum, including ABC.

You probably already have a signal meter in your TV's diagnostic menu. Tune to it for a given channel and you'll likely have a meter with bars indicating strength.

As for the antenna, I'd suggest either an HD7000R or a Clearstream CS-2-V. Both are low profile, aesthetically speaking. Both should work well. Keep in mind that attics can cause issues. Not saying it won't work, but it will impact the signal reception to some degree. In the attic, I'd likely look for a larger antenna.

Mounted outdoors, facing N-NE, without trees or buildings blocking, you should be able to tune in everything including ABC. It's not in the same cluster as the rest of the channels that are nearby, so you'll have to find the sweetspot in the middle. So be sure and adjust over that 40 degree range while checking signal strength on your weakest station. By the compass, ABC is at 48 degrees magnetic and everything else is a bit more north at 12 degrees. Aiming a little more at ABC will probably be your best setup.

Hoa's are well aware of the Federal Antenna Law that says , Yes you can install a Broadcast Tv Antenna of Any Size , Above the roof so as to have Reliable Reception.

Hoa's/Aho's , housing coven-nuts , dead restricted housing , and etc. know that the Federal Antenna Law over rules them.
The humans that make up these Hoa and etc. false governments , like to hide behind their rules and regulations and beat on you and others.

Here is the Federal Antenna Law that is Settled Law it has been tested time after time in court and the Hoa's and other crazy's have lost time after time in court.

The Federal Antenna Law is Written For You to Protect Your Rights and millions of other peoples rights

Yours is a simple reception situation.

Above the Roof install a Winegard HD7000R antenna aimed at about 20 degree magnetic compass direction.

Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html.

Most Digital Tv's have a signal strength meter and some Digital Tv's also have a signal quality meter.

A simple J type antenna mount can be used to install the antenna. Such as a Winegard DS3000 J mount.

No preamplifier is required.

For 1 Tv connected use No splitter.

For 2 Tv's connected use a simple common 2 way splitter.

For 3 Tv's connected use a simple common 3 way splitter.

Here are some places to buy antennas and etc. , http://www.solidsignal.com , http://www.amazon.com , http://www.winegarddirect.com.

_________

As always , trees and tree leaves do a good job of , reflecting/multipath , absorbing , blocking , Digital Tv reception and so do buildings and other obstructions including your own roof and house.

It is best to install the HD7000R antenna at a location that has the least amount to no amount of obstructions of any type or kind in the directions of reception including your own roof and house.

The Tv's Must Channel Scan for the , OTA= Over the Air , Digital Broadcast Tv stations/channels , often named the 'Air Channels' or 'Antenna Channels' in the Tv Setup Menu because the Tv transmissions travel through the Air from the transmitting antenna to the receiving antenna.

Some Digital Tv's will automatic channel scan for cable tv channels.

DO NOT channel scan for cable tv channels.

Go into the Tv Setup Menu and select , 'Air Channels' / 'Antenna Channels'.

So the antennas you suggest are best used for outdoor installs? I have done some research and most users suggest outdoor is really the way to go. However, with that said how do you properly ground an antenna I'm in Alabama and we have strong thunder storms?

Grounding an antenna system is a fairly simple and inexpensive part of the installation in most cases.

Two steps...

1.) Connect a #10 AWG (or heavier) copper wire to the mast and your electrical service ground rod. Insulated or bare, your choice.

2.) Run the coax from the antenna to a location close to the electrical service ground rod. Install a coax grounding block and connect it to the electrical service ground rod with #10 AWG copper wire. The distance between the ground block and rod should be under 10'.
