Setup help for father in-law

He is interested in getting only the locals (16,22,28,44 and 56) but if possible I would like to get him (64,38 and 60) too. He lives in a wooded area. All the locals are LOS at 250 degrees so I don't think that they would be that big of a problem. Channel 64 and 38 are both 2 Edge and at 290 degrees. Channel 60 is 2 Edge and at 194 degrees. I was thinking one of these three antennas but not sure because of the tree coverage. At most he will be going to 3 tvs more then likely only one

The warning at the top of your TVFR, "WARNING: Address was only resolved to zip code level and might not be that close to your actual location. For more accurate results, try entering a specific address or coordinates." makes any suggestions far more speculative. Can you provide a more accurate TVFR?

I just tried again and got the same results. I don't know what to put down for his cordinates. All I know is he lives in a community and his mailing address is different then his physical address. The address I tried is his physical address. His mailing address is a po box. I tried a different town called Lake aerial and got better results.

You might ask him for an address near his house, then if you're familiar with his house/neighborhood: go to tvfool.com select online tv maps (believe it is). Then choose a tab on right: map, terrain, satellite - whichever works best for you. Zoom in/out and try to find his street/location. I like the satellite, since you can plop your antenna down exactly where you want it (if you know how it would look on the sat photo). Adjust height for height you think it will be. Make radar plot and post it.

I found his community online and it is located in Lake Ariel so the second tvfool report should be accurate. Not as easy as I orginally thought. cause pretty much everything is at least 1 edge from him. Also he has alot of tree coverage. Plus side all the locals seem to be in the same direction and I know that they are on top of a mountain right near the ski slopes.

The 'wooded area' can be a challenge. (I'm currently working on getting my antennas up to 80' or higher due to trees, and that's with nearly 100% LOS conditions @ 30' for everything withing 35 miles.)

In you father-in-law's case, even if not for the trees, I would go big. Any of the high gain UHF antennas such as the Antennas Direct 91XG, Winegard HD9095P, or the 8-bay panel antennas would be appropriate. I would also add a High-VHF antenna such as the Antennacraft Y10713 or Winegard YA1713 to chase after real CH-11 & Ch-13. If you opt for the H-VHF, you'll need a UVSJ. In either case, you'll need a preamp such as the Antennas Direct PA-18 or Kitztech KT-200-COAX TV

Perhaps your most valuable 'investment' will be the selection of mounting location. Avoid aiming into nearby trees if at all possible.

Ok thanks. The trees where he is are pretty dense and high so getting around them or over them would be a challenge if even possible. So you think 2 seperate antennas would be better then say 1 winegard hd7698p. I see that the one you recomended has a couple more elements for Uhf. Is it harder to get Uhf or Vhf thru trees.

Connect the DB4e Uhf antenna and the YA1713 Vhf antenna together with a , Antennas Direct , EU385CF-1s. UHF antenna / VHF Antenna , Combiner.

Connect the DB4e antenna to the UHF connection of the combiner.

Connect the YA1713 antenna to the VHF connection of the combiner.

The remaining connection of the combiner connects to a , Antennas Direct CPA-19 preamp.

As always , trees and tree leaves , plants and plant leaves , do a good job of , absorbing , multi-path reflecting , blocking , OTA=Over The Air , Digital Broadcast Tv reception and so do buildings and other obstructions including your own roof and house.

It is best to install the antennas at a location that has the least amount to no amount of obstructions of any type or kind in the directions of reception including your own roof and house.

Both UHF and VHF are absorbed (converted to heat) and reflected by foliage. UHF is affected a bit more.

As teleview's aiming advise suggests, separate antennas allow you to point at signals from separate directions.

Please correct me if i'm wrong. I was looking at the tvfool report again and I noticed something. Real channels 22 WNEP ABC, 25 WYOU CBS, 28 WBRE NBC, 36 WSWB CW, 44 WVIA PBS, 47 WOLF FOX, and 49 WQPX ION are all on the UHF spectrum. Also they are all at 357 degrees. Rather then using 2 Antennas (UHF and VHF) do you guys think I could just get 1 big and powerful UHF one pointed at 357 degrees to power thru the dense trees?

You're absolutely right, looking to the NNW only WBNG operates in the VHF band.

The UHF antennas mentioned in post #8 of this thread are 'big and powerful UHF' antennas. You'll need to try one to know how much impact the trees make in this case.

You are correct.

I changed my recommendation to reflect the better reception to the , north/north west at about 357 degree magnetic compass direction.

I think would be better to up grade the DB4e to a DB8e for better UHF reception through the trees.
