Choosing a VHF/UHF antenna

I just move to a house and want to connect an OTA antenna on the roof, but not sure which VHF/UHF antenna to get. Also, do I need a preamp or an amplifier since I am planing on running the coax line about 80 feet before it enters the house and be splitting the signal three ways. The first and second line will be about 30 feet and the third line will be about 60 feet.

I will be using RG6U Quad Shield Coax cables.

Any advice will be helpful.

A Simple reception situation.

The OTA=Over The Air , Digital Broadcast Tv transmissions are Very Strong Signal Strength at your location.

Many , many , many , many , many , many , many , OTA=OverThe Air , Digital , Broadcast Tv stations/channels will be received.

Above the roof instal a Winegard HD7082P antenna (with No preamplifier and No distribution amplifier) aimed at about , 260 degree magnetic compass direction.

For 1 Tv connected use No splitter.

For 2 Tv's connected use a simple common 2 way splitter.

For 3 Tv's connected use a simple common 3 way splitter.

As always , trees and tree leaves do a good job of , reflecting , reducing , blocking , Digital Tv reception and so do buildings and other obstructions including your own roof and house.

It is best to install the HD7082P antenna at a location that has the least amount to no amount of obstructions of any type or kind in the directions of reception including your own roof and house.

The Tv's Must Channel Scan for the , OTA=Over The Air , Digital Broadcast Tv stations/channels , often named the 'Air Channels' or 'Antenna Channels' in the Tv setup menu because the Tv transmissions travel through the Air from the transmitting antenna to the receiving antenna.

Some Digital Tv's will automatic channel scan for cable tv channels.

DO NOT channel scan for cable tv channels.

Go into the Tv setup menu and select , Air Channels' / 'Antenna Channels'.

So no preamp needed, I read that if you have more then 70 feet of coax cable a preamp is recommended.

I agree with teleview's assessment, there's plenty of signal power in the air. Add to that, the passive gain provided by the antenna provides nearly as much gain as an active amplifier. If you like, you can run the calculations based on the predicted NM on your TVFR. You'll find plenty of signal to spare until you start trying for reception of distant out-of-market signals. (An amplifier gives gain, but at the cost of added noise and distortion. Antenna gain does not add noise or distortion, as a plus it tends to block some interference.)
