I'm not surprised that obstructions close in scatter signals. Additional height and / or higher gain antenna are the two options to consider. (In order of preference)

If going to a larger antenna, go all the way. A Winegard HD7698P or a combination of an Antennas Direct 91XG and Antennacraft Y10713 joined with UVSJ.

There are plenty of alternate retail outlets to shop from... Amazon, SolidSignal, Frys, Best Buy, etc.

I'd recommend the Antennacraft Y10-7-13 over the Winegard Y1713. I tested each of these antennas head to head here and the Winegard is about 2db lower in the gain department across VHF. In fact, two separate models of these antennas on a competing website confirms this. Aside from that GUM's advice is good.

Before I buy the high gain directional antenna ...

If TVFOOL shows I need < 3db more noise margin to receive the Olympics on ch 48, will adding a pre-amp and "getting back" my 5-6 db of 100 ft RG-6 cable loss, make the difference, knowing that ch 48, I think, is on the same tower as channel 31, which I do receive? I also wonder if getting a more directional antenna likes the ones recommended will eliminate the reception of the block of channels to my east (linked tvfool report on 1st post)? Would anyone recommend the Clearstream 4, which I think might be the highest medium gain antenna, which might still let me get the signals at 90 deg az?

My guess is that you have a problem with multi path. If that 4 bay won't get Ch. 48 I don't know if an 8 bay will work either. Try the 91XG. That antenna excels at obtaining channels at the high end of the UHF band and its design will help cut through the multipath and give you a viewable signal. If you can't wait to get that then see if you can locate a Antennacraft MXU 59 at a local Radio Shack. I owned both and they worked equally as well on every signal on the UHF band here from Ch. 15 to 51.

Oh yeah. Try RG 11 cable. I had a 100 foot run of RG 6 Quad Shield here and after I replaced it with RG 11 I noticed an immediate gain of 1.5 to 2 DB on EVERY CHANNEL that I receive.

Is there another antenna that I should consider that will increase my noise margin sufficiently, given that I can receive CH 31 (and want to get CH 48, +3dB more; without adding more height)? ...
I agree, higher is quite likely the single most important factor. http://www.3starinc.com/antenna_mounts_and_masts.html is one of several sources of penetrating and non-penetrating mounting hardware.

If you have 100' of RG-6, you have roughly 5 dB loss at the frequency of KING, real CH-48. That loss and any splitters, would subtract from the net noise margin at the TV. An Antennas Direct CPA-19 preamp may be one of the easiest ways to buy a few dB improvement in net noise margin at the TV.
