direction

Im in Myrtle Beach S.C. area. I will mount the antenna on the peak of my roof. aporox. 20-22' high. The line will be split and fed to four tv's through approximately two year old cable that was installed by a satellite company. I am surrounded by large tall Oaks. I want an antenna I don5t have to put on a rotar. What direction/degree do you feel is best to point it to get the most channels? Heres my link and heres some possible antennas im looking at. I want the best multi directional antenna I can get. Do you recommend an amp. Thank you for any help,
Bryan

Several things:

1) You cannot, under ANY circumstance, use any sort of pre-amplifier. You're less than 5 miles from a half-million-watt station and it will overload just about any pre-amp out there. You *might* get away with a distribution amp if well-selected.

2) If you don't use a rotor, you will likely need to set your priorities as to what channels and stations are most desired. Be prepared to compromise.

3) Tall trees in full leaf make great signal ockers/shredders. When they're wet and dancing in the wind, be prepared for poor reception. Only thing that can be guaranteed to fix that is either a chainsaw or a tower taller than the trees.

4) If CBS 13.1 is on your must-have list, be prepared to either use a combo antenna or to address it separately. The C4 and the DB8 both usually do a fair job on channel 13 although you might find that the VHF reception is better off the back than the front of most UHF design antennas. YMMV.

A 1 antenna Solution to receive Many Digital Tv stations/channels.

Above the roof install a , Antenna Craft HBU44 antenna aimed at about 224 degree magnetic compass direction.

Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html.

Use a Old School magnetic compass to aim antenna.

_____________

Many of the Tv stations are very close and very strong signal strength , recommed do not use any type or kind antenna system amplifier.

Recommend use a plain and simple 4 way splitter.

_____________

If WITV-DT VHF high band channel 7 - PBS , is weak signal strength , is received on all 4 Tv's then you are good to go.

If not then you can try a Channel Master CM3414 distribution amplifier.

_____________

Here are some places to buy antennas and etc. .

http://www.solidsignal.com.

http://www.amazon.com.

http://www.channelmasterstore.com.

http://www.antennacraft.net.

http://www.ronard.com

_____________

Do not use any of the Satellite Tv passive and active devices such as and not limited to , multi-switches , multi-plexers , splitters , couplers , amplifiers , power injectors , power supplies , and etc. , must be Disconnected and Removed.

Yes it is Ok to use the satellite Tv coaxes and other coaxes that are in/on the building to get the antenna reception from point A to point B.

_____________

Here are some antenna mounts.

http://www.ronard.com/909911.html.
Use the , ronard(911) , 5 foot antenna mount.

http://www.ronard.com/34424560.html.
Use the , ronard(4560) , eave antenna mount.

http://www.ronard.com/ychim.html.
Measure around the chimney and use a , ronard(2212) , ronard(2218) , ronard(2224).

Buy the ronard antenna mounts at solidsignal or buy from ronard.

your recommending the directional HBU44 over the multi directional c4 and db8? once I put this on the roof I will adjust the direction until I get the most channels but then it will be clamped down and not turn again. I am going to order an antenna in the next few days.

Thank you,
I just ordered the HBU44 antenna and a cheaper 5' tripod. I will beef up the rivets in the tripod if need be with stainless steel nuts and bolts. I have a lot of them. The antenna and tripod on Amazon after shipping was $108.00. When it comes in I will be up on the roof with my compass pointed it at 224 magnetic north and then clamp her down. I will let you know how things go.
Thank you for the help,
Bryan in Myrtle Beach

Before putting screws through the tripod feet and into the roof , just set the tripod on the roof so as to test reception.

Might need to locate tripod and antenna for best reception.

The antenna came in yesterday. I went and bought a 10' pole and set it on peak of roof with a tripod mount. I measured the height of antenna and im 26' from the ground. I have been messing with pointing it at different degrees and placing it at different locations on the peak for two days to get the most channels. It's not fun when your bye yourself. I think I wore out my ladder going back and forth from the roof to the LR TV. If I point it at 224 degrees I loose cbs 13.1, 13.2. 15, 15.2 but I gain 11 and 8 which are local advertising beach channels. I think it's the large trees and the opposite directions of the towers. Pointing the antenna at 350 degrees I get 32, 32.2, 32.3. 23.1, 23.2, 23.3. 15, 152. 21.1 , 13.1 , 13.2. I never could get 7 at either direction. I think im going to buy that amp you suggested before I lagg it down and play with the direction some more before I put holes in the roof.

All outside coax is/are suspect of being bad.

All outside connections and connectors are suspect of being bad.

And All other coax and connections and connectors through out the system are suspect of being bad.

As a Test to prove reception , connect a New continues length of coax that has the Compression Type Connectors on the ends of the coax , not the old crimp type connectors on the ends of the coax.

Run the New continues length of coax through a open door or window direct to 1 Tv , No splitters , No couplers , No nothing , just direct to 1 Tv.

What is reception now??

Recommend aim antenna at about 224 degree magnetic compass direction.

Digital Tv's can develop - Digital Glitches - that are not cleared out with simple channel scans.

Do Double Rescan , http://www.wchstv.com/DoubleReScanAlert.pdf.

___________

Be sure and Disconnect and Remove All passive and active cable tv devices.

If any type or kind of active cable delivered service , be it , cable tv , cable internet , cable phone , the active cable service must be on a seperate coax that is not connected to the antenna system.

Yes the coaxes that were connected to the cable system can be used for the antenna system.

__________

Trees and tree leaves , plants and plant leaves , have a Negative effect on broadcast Tv reception.

Multi-path reflections bouncing off the trees/plants and tree/plants leaves.

Trees and tree leaves , plants and plant leaves , absorb and block Tv reception.
