I would plan on mounting outdoors, clear of the obstruction and impairment created by the roof and attic construction.

Your report is similar to many in the San Diego area. A UHF antenna and separate H-VHF antenna can give you a very good shot at reliable reception.

Consider the Antennas Direct DB8E facing about 147° (compass) and an Antennacraft Y10713 pointed at 204°. An RCA TVPRAMP1R preamplifier has separate inputs for the two antennas.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
