Safely clearing the tree tops buys you more than any other lone factor. You'll gain a dB or two of additional signal, and you'll get up and out of the fluttering, variable foliage attenuation which will go a long way toward maintaining a lock on weaker signals.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
