how high do I have to have the antenna over the house??????
To be sure, you can run the Interactive TV Maps tool. Plug in the best reasonable height available to you and at the same time, locate the pointer on the proposed antenna location. You will be able to see if mounting at the roof peak gets you out of 'edge-path' condition on one or more stations of interest.

A premium mounting solution option would be a tripod with a 5' or 10' mast section at the roof peak.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
