Trees are more of a problem for UHF frequencies than Low-VHF. Still, can you tell us more? How tall, and how dense? What type trees?
Are there significant power lines and / or substations in the area?

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
