They might think they are 1080, but your tv set can't lie, as long as it's capable of 1080i or p. 1080p is not a OTA broadcast standard, but 1080i is.

A weak 1080i signal does NOT change to 720p magically...

So they MUST be still broadcasting at 720p, regardless of what they think. Seeing how even my local channels can't get their aspect ratios correct on new subchannels, it appears most station engineers are fairly clueless. Not only that, but I've also realized none of them apparently ever tune an actual tv set to their own station, so they can't tell what they are broadcasting...
