Simple rule of thumb: If it doesn't work in the attic, try it outside. 
Have you tried moving the antenna to different locations in the attic? And have you experimented with aim point?
(No, don't spend money on an amplifier.)

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
