Do you have any windows facing the SW? Or better, a balcony?
Also, if it were me, I'd put an indoor antenna on a length of RG-6, test reception on your main floor, then bring it into the attic. Or just bring a small tv and the antenna up there with an extension cord.
You may or may not be able to tell what's under the roofing, but if the signals drop to almost nothing up there, it's not looking good for a better antenna up there, either.
