As of late, I've been using a Linux PC as my PVR/DVR.

Mythbuntu is an open-source option. XBMC is another.

For basic recording, I simply use a script to control one of my SiliconDust HDHR tuners and write to the hard drive in MPEG2 format, which is viewable via VLC.
