I am fairly certain these are original / unmodified.

The differences are channel dependent and on the order of just a couple of dB at most. I expect that you would see little difference changing to the 91XG unless the 'hack' you mentioned has reduced the performance of your CM antenna. If I understand you correctly, the left and right bays of your antenna are joined using two baluns and a reversed 2-way splitter. If so, you could easily be loosing 4 dB or more signal as it passes through those components.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
