I suspect that a smaller antenna would be needed if mounted a bit higher, above the peak of the roof. You can test that theory for free, just run a TV Fool report for the higher elevation...
In the attic, I'd agree that a lager antenna as suggested by teleview would be appropriate. In the end, attics can be awful locations for reliable reception.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
