Based on your description of the trees, the HBU-44 is certainly not excessive. I'm in the same market as you, with a slightly better TVFR and have concluded that you can't install too big an antenna.

If you would like to consider a premium solution, an Antennas Direct DB8e + Antennacraft Y10713 + RCA TVPRAMP1R preamplifier would be my suggestion. This gives you the ability to tweak the aim of the UHF and H-VHF antennas independently while giving a bit more gain than a large combo antenna.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
