If the indoor solution is not working well, it may be because you have an amplifier built in to the antenna. The signals are far too strong to use any type of amplifier.

I'd use an RCA ANT-751R on the roof. It's fairly small but should do quite well. Again, no amplifier.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
