As teleview has already said, the ideal location for an antenna is generally high and clear of obstructions.

However, you are certainly free to experiment with other locations. As long as you get reliable reception, I think everyone should be delighted.

Attic mounting does offer protection from the elements, if you get reliable reception from in the attic, the antenna will last indefinitely and, as you say, there will be far less risk from lighting.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
