Re. the AM antenna, I would experiment with 20 to 50 feet of wire perhaps in the attic. you may need to try different placements to minimize hum / noise pickup from nearby or parallel power lines.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
