You can certainly try in the attic. I expect that you'll have less success with the weaker signals. Also, the Winegard antennas can be quite difficult to refold which may leave you with the antenna 'trapped' in the attic. Take a look at an Antennacraft HBU-44 or HBU-55, they are much easier to re-fold if the need arises.
You'll want to measure carefully, the antennas we've suggested are long.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
