I called the engineering department at WIAT.
An other transmitter will be built in the near future , WIAT channel 42 , the transmitter will be 2.5 miles from your grand fathers house , and as such the signal will be Very Strong.
WIAT channel 30 transmitter is further away and the signal is weaker.

For reception with a antenna on a 50 foot tower the 3671 antenna you now have will receive CBS and all the receivable Tv stations with no problems no matter what happens.
A antenna amplifier will not be required at 50 feet antenna height.
