ADTech is right, I was wrong. I had it in my head that the HDX1000 was non-amplified. As ADTech has pointed out, you have no choice but to power the HDX1000, the built-in amplifier is not going to pass signal without power.
I still think the CS2 will do better, while being small enough to be portable.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
