Take two strips of foil 5" long. mount them on cardboard end to end with a 1" gap between them. Strip the coax to expose two wires (The center conductor and the sheild). Attach these wires to the foil at the gap. Mount the antenna in a horizontal position and aim to one of the directions mentioned. Scan the DTV for antenna channels. If he can not get the foil any metalic material (wire ect.) will work.
It doesn't matter how wide the material is. The important thing is the length.
