If you can, at least do a temperary outside mount as per @Electrons instructions, and you have GOOD signal, little or no drop outs, and a signal meter in your tuner with moderate to high levels, you MAY be OK in the attic. As a rule of thumb and with a plywood standard shingel roof, you will loose 1/2 of your signal (3db). Could get worse if you get a snow build up.
