VHF Only. No UHF
 

Hi all,
Have a 10 year old ROOFTOP antenna. Used it for the first time about a year back. Everything was great. I did not check it again until recently. With the same setup, I now get only 3 channels. 2,7 and 50. Figured 2 & 7 are VHF. Don't know the deal with 50.
What do I need to check? Any ideas why I would miss UHF only?

Has water gotten into the coax or matching transformer at the antenna?

What is the make & model number of the antenna?

Of the antennas shown here what antenna looks the most like the on you have?? http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html. The antenna is to be aimed at about 77 degree magnetic compass. It is most likley a bad connection. A make and model number of the antenna will be very helpful.

I think my antenna looks like "A Yagi Backed With a Corner Reflector". I gotta get on to the roof (I don't trust myself with this). Is there any other way to confirm antenna is the issue and not the tuner on my TVs? (Although it is unlikely both my TVS would have tuner issues).

Check the aim as Electron has suggested.

A simple method of checking would be to borrow an known good TV. If there is no UHF signal at that point, substitute a known good matching transformer and coax cable. (Run the cable temporarily, through a door or window.) Water in the coax is very likely to cause more loss in the UHF frequency range than in the VHF... but, it's bad for both. If you have water in the coax, it needs to be replaced.

Perhaps a thunderstorm could have damaged both tuners... but it's quite unlikely you'd still have VHF capability. The most common result of a lightning strike would be a dead TV. You're right when you say, "it is unlikely both my TVS would have tuner issues".

So the antenna that is outside , is it broken?? , are there pieces hanging down?? Is the antenna all there?? The Tv transmissions are strong at your location. Install one of these indoor antennas , indoors , Channel Master CM4010 or Terk HDTVi. Aim the indoor antenna at about 77 degrees magnetic compass. North east.

Antenna is definitely not broken. As much as I can see, there are no loose wires either. I tried one of those indoor ones, but reception was very flaky.
What surprises me is that the quality of the VHF channels is great and reasonably consistent.
I guess I have to get up there to check closely.

Depending on the make and model, the transformer will be directly connected to terminals on the antenna, or the transformer may be an integral part of the antenna.

If you decide to install a new antenna , install a Winegard HD7084P antenna and aim the HD7084P antenna at about 77 degree magnetic compass. The HD7084P antenna is a All Channel antenna that will receive all the channels, VHF low band 2 thru 6 , VHF high band 7 thru 13 and UHF 14 thru 69. There is one low band channel to be received WOCK-CD digital channel 4 http://americaone.com .
