Hi everyone. I've enjoyed browsing the site - great information!

I am planning to install this unit in place of an old Dish. It will be installed at the peak of the roof with very little obstruction from nearby trees.

What direction should I point this? I hope to get fox and the three main networks. Am I likely to succeed?

The basic antenna performance of the HDX1000 is severely lacking in the VHF bands. You'll need VHF capability to see KCPQ, KCTS and KSTW.

For KOMO and KING, the weakest of your 'main networks' the UHF performance of the HDX1000 is marginal at best. I'd suggest a Winegard HD7696P.

The gain and beam-width of the HD7696P should allow you to aim at about 29° compass and be able to receive most of the signals on your report from the top down to and including the primary KIRO transmitter on real CH-39 on Queen Anne Hill in Seattle.

If you are going to use more than 25' of coax, or will be splitting to two or more tuners, you'll need to consider using a preamp such as the Antennas Direct CPA-19 or Winegard HDP-269.

Thanks for your input GroundUrMast! I plan to use the included amplifier and won't be splitting for multiple tvs. I guess I won't waste too much time tinkering around with it if I don't get good results. Do you know of any brick and mortar retailers in Seattle (preferably Eastside) that might stock the HD7696P???

Are the three listings that come up when I used the Winegard 'Find a Dealer' tool. http://www.winegard.com/dealer/home-antenna.php I've not had any experience with any of these businesses.

Would this be a good choice, or should I go out of my way to find the Winegard HD7696P or wait to buy it online?

Honestly, I was leaning towards recommending that antenna. This means you will be aiming for the KIRO translator on ch 51 that is at 70 degrees. I think that antenna has a wide enough beamwidth to get that channel while still getting the HD FOX channel at 7 degrees. You'll need to experiment with aim at around 40 degrees.
