Need your help with getting Channel 13 WLOS from attic antenna
Hello Everyone, I am in need of your support. I want to install an antenna and say good bye to my local cable company. I have purchased several off the shelf antenna's from walmart with good results. The one channel that I am not able to pick up is WLOS channel 13 ABC. Based on the color legend it recommends that in order to pick up this channel I will more than likely need to install an antenna on my roof. I prefer not to do this but rather install in my attic.
The off the shelf antenna's that I have tried provide great reception with 80-100% signal strength with the excepton of channel 13. I would like to get your advise on how I can overcome this obstacle with placing the right antenna in my attic. I am willing to invest in a good antenna that I can place in my attic to include getting channel 13. Any advice that you can help will be greatly appreciated. I look forward to your response. The provided tvfool report shows no antenna height above ground. Do not delete the tvfool report that shows no antenna height above ground. ---------- To see if the reception situation improves. Please make and post a tvfool report with the Exact address and make the antenna height in the tvfool report 25 feet above ground. A antenna height of 25 feet above ground is a Reference antenna height that provides a good evaluation of what is receivable. |
WLOS is going to require a serious high-VHF antenna outside, up in the air...plus some luck that you don't encounter localized electronic or electrical interference. Anything less is likely a wasted effort.
WLOS has a permit to build a 250 watt channel 31 translator just north of Greenville that *might* reach you, but I have no information if it's ever been built. It's not in the TVFool database. |

Thanks for the quick reply. If WLOS is going to build the new transmitter what would the 250 Watt do to the variables in the report? Our guess was we were not receiving WLOS because the signal strength was weak. The variable that we focused in on the report was the NM(db) was at 13.2. So what would the 250 Watt transmitter do to our NM value? Or if our assumption was incorrect with the NM variable what should we focus on if/when the Watts are increased?

I don't know. Since it isn't in the database, there isn't an available calculation. My guess is about 18-20 dB below W28DB before impairments (trees, buildings, etc). While the CP is for a spot on the the same tower as W28DB, it's spot is 55 or so feet below W28DB's antenna. Perhaps Tower Guy might offer some additional insight, he works with similar facilities for a living.
The calculated noise margin for WLOS' channel 13 is a rough approximation based on data which has some significant potential for deviation. It also doesn't include the generally higher noise floor on VHF nor for any local noise floor increases due to electrically noisy stuff in your immediate vicinity or in your home. Plus, there's a ton of FM signal nearby and FM is more apt to cause interference into the VHF channels and, if present, would need to be dealt with (if possible). |
To try for WLOS in the attic get a Y10-7-13 plus a channel 13 jointenna from the Channelmaster store. Aim the antenna at 5 degrees and try it without your existing antenna. If it works, then combine the two antenna with the jointenna.

I just purchased the jointenna from channelmaster. I will look to source the y10-7-13 from different vendors. Do any vendors/suppliers have a better y10-7-13 antenna - or are they all the same? Thanks to all for the help ! I have built ladders in my attic to get these antenna/s so i can cut the cable cord! |
