Dish shaped antennas

Does anyone know just what, if anything, you can pick up with a dish shaped antenna if you don't subscribe to Dish Network or Direct TV? I mean can you pick up free HD on it and how big would it have to be to pick up signals from say 80 to 100 miles away. Also, does anyone know why I can't seem to read replies to previous posts from other people. One of them might have contained an answer for me.

A dish for OTA would probably need to be a minimum of 6'dia and that would only cover UHF.
Aiming would also need to be fairly exact.
W/o posting a TVFool report though, nobody can tell you if it would even be possible, regardless of what is used.
