Antenna Choice for Weaverville, NC
Hi,
My address is not listed yet, but this one is 2000 ft. north of me: http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...9900fd254f4626. My house is higher up on the mountain, so I put the antenna height at 500 ft. in the report. Which antenna would be best for me. I'd especially like to get NBC (for the olympics). I bought an RCA ANT700R (http://www.walmart.com/ip/RCA-Outdoo...tenna/20976675) but I'm going to return it. I have it sitting on a bookcase but it's only picking up 3 channels. Channel 27 if I point it SW & channel 2 if I point it N. I'd like to get a good outdoor antenna and mount it up high on the chimney. I have a 3 story house. I have pretty clear views counter clockwise from NE to SW. I have a mountain behind me blocking the rest. What's the best antenna setup for me? Thanks, Chris |

I will like to see a radar plot map that is made at your location.
On the tvfool home page go to >>Start MAPS<< part of tvfool. Move the pointer to your location and make a radar plot map. Make the antenna height 25 feet. |
Thanks, didn't know I could do that. Here is the radar plot:

Here are the Tv stations/channels to the South West.
WLOS Real channel 13 virtual channel (13.1) ABC and MyNetwork. W09AR Real channel 9 virtual channel (9.1) CBS and Me-Tv. WUNF-TV Real channel 25 virtual channel (33.1) PBS. WASV-LP Real channel 50 virtual channel (50.1) The CW. WUNW Real channel 27 virtual channel (27.1) PBS. W06AJ Real channel 6 virtual channel (6.1) NBC and This Tv. WHNS Real channel 21 virtual channel (21.1) FOX. Install Winegard HD7084P antenna with a Winegard AP8275 preamp Above the roof aimed at about 225 degree magnetic compass. Here are the Tv stations/channels to the North East.
W02AT Real channel 2 virtual channel (2.1) CBS and Me-Tv. WCYB-TV Real channel 5 virtual channel (5.1) NBC and The CW. WJHL-TV Real channel 11 virtual channel (11.1) CBS and Me-Tv. W09AS Real channel 9 virtual channel (9.1) NBC and This Tv. For reception of the Tv stations channels to the north east aim a Winegard HD7084P antenna with a Winegard AP8275 preamp at about 40 degree magnetic compass. This antenna system Will Not be connected to the other antenna system aimed to the south west. The 2 Separate antenna systems will be separate with separate coax all the way to the location of the Tv where the 2 separate coaxes are connected to a remote control A/B antenna switch , http://www.radioshack.com , #15-1968 , or , http://www.mcmelectronics.com , #32-4425 . I recommend install the North East system first. Reason: W06AJ Real channel 6 NBC and This Tv is a Very Weak transmission and may not be received. WCYB-TV Real channel 5 NBC and The CW is a much stronger transmission. No A/B switch is required for 1 antenna system. One antenna can be use to receive the Tv stations/channels to the south west and north east , put the one Tv antenna on a antenna rotor. A Tv antenna rotor is not channel surfing friendly , must wait for the antenna to rotate , not every one in the house will agree with the direction the antenna is aimed. A 2 antenna system Is Channel Surfing Friendly , with a A/B antenna switch then the antennas can be changed at the push of a button and keep on channel surfing. |

Ok I think I am done making corrections.
The Tv/s Must Channel Scan for the Broadcast Tv Channels sometimes named the 'Air Channels' or "Antenna Channels' in the Tv setup menu because the Tv transmissions travel through the air from the transmitting antenna to the receiving antenna. DO NOT channel scan for cable tv channels. |
Thanks so much. Is there a better quality of coax cable I should be looking for, or are they all about the same?
Also, how do you channel scan when you have two antennas? The second scan would overwrite the 1st scan channels. At least that's what my TV does when set to Auto scan. If you try to manually add channels you can't specify the sub channels, 27-1, 27-2, ... |

What is the make and model number of the Tv?? So I can read the owners manual.
In the Tv menu set up. Most Tv's do have some way to scan again to add channels. Or some way to add channels using the Real channel number , the plain number without the , .1 , .2 , .3 , 5.1 , 5.2 , 5.3 , just the plain number 5 Standard RG-6 coax with solid copper center wire is Ok. Tri shield and quad shield coax is not required for locations that have low to no interfering signals. |
I have a Panasonic Plasma, have to look the model# up, but I can figure it out I'm sure - don't want to put you to that trouble. Thanks for all your help, am excited to start watching the Olympics!
One last question. The specs for the HD7084P are rated as: UHF 45 miles, VHF 80 miles. A couple of my stations are 50+ miles away. Not sure if they're UHF or VHF. You originally mentioned the HD8200U which is UHF 60 miles and VHF 100 miles. Is this antenna overkill? It's only about $30 more from wineguarddirect.com ($132). Will the HD7084P pull in all the channels you mentioned? Chris |

No trouble at all , I like to look this stuff up.
Mileage figures are General reference target figure numbers. I do the antenna recommendations based on the received signal strength. The HD7084P and the HD8200U will both provide reception. Sometimes I will move down from the HD8200U because it is so large. Question askers about reception , often times begin making noises about the size of the HD8200U antenna. I prefer to have the question asker will get reception , then to back out over the issue of antenna size. Many people do not understand that in certain reception situations a large antenna is required. That said , Yes the HD8200P antenna will provide some more reception ability. Signal fade margin , the signal strength can go down and the larger antenna will still receive the signal because the extra signal gathering ability (gain) of the larger antenna , elbow room. The HD8200U is not too much antenna. The HD8200U is what I would use at your location. Be sure and use a Strong and Sturdy antenna mount. If mounting both antennas on the same mast pipe separate both antennas by about 3 feet. If the antennas are mounted on separate antenna mounts then separate more then 3 feet. |
