Need help with starting out

I live on a 2nd floor apartment of a 3 floor building so I need to have an indoor antenna. I'm hoping its possible to get some stations. The first floor is halfway underground though so im not all that high off the ground. My guess would be 10 feet.

I always had cable tv until now so I've never used an antenna or know anything about them. I do know that I need a digital converter though.

I have 1 HDTV in my living area and an old tube tv in the bedroom so im guessing I'd need two antennas? Any help is appreciated.

Give a Terk HDTVi (not the HDTVa) a try. Point it to the NW. Depending on the results, you may get a second one. If it works well in one location but not the other, you may opt for a small outdoor type that can fit in the space you have available.

You only need a converter box for the tube TV, and you'll like the 1080p of the new uncompressed HD on your HDTV.

The Pending Applications Included tvfool radar map shows that most/major groups of Digital Tv stations/channels are to the , north/north west.

Install a Terk HDTVi , (not a HDTVa) indoor type Tv antenna in/at a , north west , west , facing window or balcony window.

Aimed at about , 325 degree magnetic compass direction.

If the Tv is not real close to the window then run a loooong coax from the HDTVi antenna that is in/at the window to the Tv in the living area.

The Tv Must channel scan for the , OTA= Over The Air , Digital Broadcast Tv stations/channels , often named the 'Air Channels' or 'Antenna Channels' in the Tv Setup Menu because the Tv transmissions travel through the Air from the transmitting antenna to the receiving antenna.

Some Digital Tv's will automatic channel scan for cable tv channels.

DO NOT channel scan for cable tv channels.

Go into the Digital Tv Setup Menu and select , 'Air Channels' / 'Antenna Channels'.

And will most likely supply plenty of signal strength to 2 Tv's.

A simple 2 way splitter can be connected to the HDTVi antenna.

If the old analog picture tube Tv does not have Digital Broadcast Tv Tuner then the RCA DTA800B1 is a simple converter box that converts Digital Broadcast signals to the Analog signal for the Analog glass cathode ray picture tube Tv.

Many of the Higher End analog picture tube Tv's of the past have , Analog Component Video Inputs , that is the analog equivilent of digital high definition.

Even the old basic analog picture tube Tv's , will show a suprisingly good picture when supplied a high quality analog signal such as that from the output of a Digital Broadcast Tv tuner/converter.

My tv is right next to the sliding glass door that goes to the balcony, although i'll have to check to see which direction that faces. Also, the signal i'll receive is actually high definition?

Also the tube tv is an old Sanyo 42" (I believe) that has red, yellow and white plugs in the back where I plug my ps3 into. Are those the component video inputs? Sorry that i'm so clueless with this stuff.

There will be many programs broadcast in 720P or 1080i. There are also quite a few broadcast in 480i (standard definition).

The common color code for composite video cable and jacks on consumer grade equipment is: red=right audio, white=left audio & yellow=composite video (luminance & color signals combined). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composite_video

Component video is less common and there's more than one format. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Component_video

Direct and to the point , understand that I am referring to , for Tv applications.

Analog signal.

Component Video / also named as YP-B P-R. as the Analog equivilent of digital high definition.

Analog Tv applications of , Composite Video or S-Video ->Are Not<- high definition.

I am also making it 100% understanding that a Basic Analog Picture Tube Tv - that has , Antenna input , Composite Video , S-Video , >Can Not<- be made to show a high definition picture.

A basic Analog Picture Tube Tv will show the basic 480i picture resolution and that is it , period.

The picture will look very good because the Tv is receiving a high quality 480i Analog Signal from the Broadcast Tv Digital to Analog Converter Box.

However that ->Does Not Mean<- that the 480i picture is high definition.

Alright, I think I got it and I appreciate the explanation. I do only have the yellow, white and red plugins on the tv. I ordered the antenna that you guys suggested and will let you know how it works out once I receive it. I decided to hold off on the digital converter for the tube tv until I see how the hdtv responds. Also my gf didn't really like the idea of me having a wire going from the living room to the bedroom so might get a 2nd antenna there depending how the hdtv works out lol. Thanks for all the help!
