Hi all,

I took my first step and got rid of the cable TV provider.

The only interest I have is for CBC TV, however from the TV signal analysis below, I can see CBC in the gray area, which in a way surprises me given that I live in the capital city of my province.
I would be interested in receiving some TV channels from Maine which is about 70 miles from me... but I realize it is a distance for analog reception.

As far as my hardware is concerned, presently, the only thing I have is a dish on my roof from Bell Aliant which was installed by the previous home owner, I never used it and I wonder whether in my case it is convenient to buy a receiver and point the dish where I can receive some broadcasts or should I go for a simple analog roof antenna?

Your suggestion is very welcome as I am a bit doubtful. :rolleyes:

The default antenna height is of tvfool radar report is 10 feet. To see if the tv transmissions get stronger and get more tv stations and channels. Make 2 more radar reports , 25 feet and 45 feet.

Nothing from Maine will be received unless the antenna can be mounted higher , make 2 more posts with the antenna at 60 feet and 100 feet. The local tv stations/channels will be received with a Winegard HD7080P antenna mounted above the roof at about 25 feet above ground. Aim the antenna at about 168 degree magnetic compass. Because of the differences in the way the databases maintained by Canadian and American agencies work, TVFool will always be behind the current situation in Canada. Bring up your report at 25 feet, then select the "pending applications included" option. You'll see CBAT-DT show up with a strong signal in your area.

Before you commit to anything, reveiw the last 10 pages or so of this thread at digitalhome.ca that covers reception results for yor area. Don't be afraid to ask your question there, as they work with TVFool plots like we do here.

The Maine Tv stations will not be received even with the antenna height at 100 feet at your location.

You can play the game of 'what if' at tvfool. Go to the >>Start MAPS<< part of tvfool on the home page. put in your address , when the map comes up , you move the pointer to other locations and see what reception is like there. Having the antenna on hills (higher ground elevation) is usually better. A good starting antenna height is 25 feet because 25 feet is about the height of a antenna mounted above the roof. Also click on Pending Applications Included that way you get the current and pending stations. The game is to get the Tv stations signal strengths in to the , red , yellow , green , reception zones. The gray reception zone is no good. American Tv stations call signs start with a W or K.

wouldn't the Winegard HD7084P more appropriate in my case instead of the Winegard HD7080P ?
I was looking at the VHF reception range, approximately 80 miles for the 7084 Vs 50 miles for the 7080.
The distance from Fredericton to Mount Champlain (CTV is the hardest station for me to get) is about 70 miles.

Also, will I need an amplifier or shall I first try without and then get it if needed?

Also, coming to the antenna sizes, I read width: 110 in., is it indeed so large or am I missing something?

Yes use a HD7084P it will provide more signal on weaker Tv stations.
