Antenna recommendation 30miles out

2 Attachment(s)
Hello all,

Need some "experts" to point me in the right direction. Attached are images of, and links to TV fool reports.

Situation: My elderly father lives out in the country, 1.5 story house is located on a slightly elevated hill.

Front porch of house looks almost directly to the NORTH. I forsee no multi-path problems like where I live for him. Most all stations are showing as LOS (Light of sight) @44-45 degree heading @ 30 miles out from the transmitters

House is wood frame, with brick exterior. Roof decking is plywood or OSB and asphalt shingles.
There is a "attic" section on 2nd floor on the side of the house facing the transmitters @44-45 that a antenna could be placed. But I doubt that will work due to signal loss.

(Additionally, there "MIGHT" be enough room in the very "UPPER" section of the main roof towards the roof ridge to mount a antenna inside the attic... @ around 25-28ft off the ground)

Reason for the OTA Antenna:

They have satellite. (Dish Network) Problem is the Dish Network 722k DVR only has (2) tuners, and him and his wife are getting alot of "Tuner in Use" messages which is causing them to fight over who see's /records what.

Not good at their age, not good on me either.

Being the good son I am to reduce the frequency of their fighting I purchased a OTA tuner module for the 722k, which will add (2) tuners. Most likely cable will be run to 722k only.

Figured the OTA tuner would:
A: Reduce the number of tuner in use messages
B: Give a better OTA pic (assuming the 722k doesn't compress image)
C: Keep them from losing locals stations during times of bad weather.

**************************

Front porch of house has a clear shot towards towers @ 44-45 degrees.
Last weekend l temporarily attached a spare Dish "J-Pole" to one of the wooden porch columns and duck taped on a set of rabbit ears.. Reception was to be expected using a set of rabbit ears at 30 miles out.

I'd estimate height at J-pole est @ 15ft off ground.

If mounted at this location I would think a smaller antenna would be required, for dimensional mounting and aesthetic reasons.

(If HD7694P was suitable, I wonder about it clearing the column.)

TVfool report with antenna @ 15ft level

Dad 15 ft J-Mount off front porch 30 miles out

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...e1c6d56b2695af

If mounting a antenna in the attic- add a big whopping 5ft

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...e1c620517f152e

Roof mounting:
Dad 35ft roof mount 30 miles out

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...e1c6ecdd299186

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Hoping a smaller antenna would work off the J-Pole on the North East corner of the house that has a clear shot to the towers, or mounting a antenna in the attic might work but realize higher is better and that shooting thru the roof would reduce signal strength by 50% or so.

I'd want to receive WUOA for it's 720P (HD) feed of 'This TV'. That will require an antenna with L-VHF capability. Consider the Winegard HD7084P.

(Screenshot of station line-up attached-pulled off the Winegard site in case it helps)

Thanks for mentioning WUOA on L-VHF (Channel 6).

That complicates things as I would imagine they would enjoy some of the programing.
This Tv (6) L-VHF

Channels that are also needed:
MeTv (13.2)
PBS= Dad likes WWII stuff (10.1, 10.2, 10.3)

Assuming they didn't care about L-VHF, what are some other options than the HD7048P?

I doubt I could find a place in the attic big enough for the HD7048P. Would the Winegard-HD7694P or RCA ANT751 be anywhere close to a workable solution?

(Find it disingenuous that it is listed on Amazon the HD7694P has a range of 50 miles and when you go to Winegard site says much less. 35 and 25)

If a BIG antenna is needed, how about the Winegard-HD8200U-Platinum-VHF-Antenna?

http://www.amazon.com/Winegard-HD820.../dp/B001DFS4BI

I would prefer using the J-Pole mounted on the NE corner of the porch or maybe doing a attic mount. I think there is a second attic towards the top of peak of the roof for a smaller antenna.

One thing I'm dealing with is I'm trying to keep it as cheap as possible for them as stepmother is fighting me even getting the OTA up and running. She's the type to say NO (repeatedly- without even having the facts), and you have to drag her along... In the end she "loves" whatever it is she said NO to at the beginning.

With that said, I'm trying to avoid having to get up on the roof, but realize the best place is outside.

Oh, What are your feelings towards the best mount to use if roof mounting, and if that isn't possible what are the best bang for the buck antenna masts to get that antenna up to about 40ft?

As a always , trees and tree leaves , plants and plant leaves , have a Negative Effect on Broadcast Tv Reception and so do buildings and other obstructions including your own roof and building in the directions of reception.

The directions of reception at the reception location are , North East , West South West. The Tv stations to the North West have Duplicate Networks that are received to the North East.

Some and not all Negative Effects are.

Absorbing and Blocking Reception.

Multi-Path Reflecting Tv Signals Bouncing All Around.

The Best Pratice for Reliable Reception is to install the antennas at a location that has the Least Amount to No Amount of Obstructions of Any Type or Kind in the directions of reception including your own roof and building.

Thank you for the links and the info.

I like the idea of using antenna's specific to frequencies they target. Also like the adjustable panels of the (UHF) Antennas Direct , DB8e.

While I understand mounting antenna(s) in "Free Air" is most desirable this weekend I was briefly able to get up into the attic on the "3rd" story of the house. (Approx 30ft from ground level)

Based upon the numbers you are seeing in the TV fool report, is there any chance antenna's being mounted within the protective shell of the roof would work well?
Roof=Conventional construction, 2x8 joists, plywood or OSB decking, asphalt shingles.
(50% in signal reduction, right?)

50% signal strength reduction , Tv antenna in the attic , is the target number , can be more , can be less.

There is also the interference and multi-path issues in the attic.

--->The Only Way<---to Discover what the Reception is like in the Attic is to Install the Antennas in the Attic.

The CS600 VHF channel 2 thru 13 antenna is for reception of.

WUOA Real VHF channel 6 , This Tv.

WVTM-DT Real VHF channel 13 , NBC , MeTv.

WBIQ-DT Real VHF channel 10 , PBS Networks.

WJSU-DT Real VHF channel 9 , ABC.
