Antenna Advice

Newbie to OTA. Cut my cable about a month ago and just went the netflix route for a while. Now I picked up a Mohu Leaf 50 and managed to get quite a few channels. 13 on one TV and 10 on the other. I relocated it inside the attic above my garage. (I'm not sure I can get the whole way to my actual attic). I have the same exact signal.

I'm getting everything down to the CBS in the yellow. I'd like to pick up the PBS and ABC stations yet. If I can get to the CBS in the red that would be a huge bonus because those 2 CBS stations carry different football games on Sunday. When I ran the coax to the garage attic I ran probably an extra 8' or so that I could go outside with it if I need. I'm in a suburban development with houses on both sides. Tall trees to the north. I have the Leaf on the west side of the house and that seems to be where the best signal is for most.

Thanks!

To see if signal strengths improve.

Please make and post 3 more tvfool reports , 25 feet antenna height , 40 feet antenna height , 60 feet antenna height , above ground.

Those signals in red will be tough to reliably receive. The strengths shown are single digits. An attic install is pretty questionable for that scenario as well. Of course, the best install is as high as you can go with a clear view of the horizon. Most installs are a compromise on that.

Do you know if the 50 is VHF capable? Hidden elements often hide that and you have to figure it out the hard way when the mfgr website doesn't call it out. Does NBC come in well? ABC is weak and being VHF, that could be the issue if the antenna isn't tuned for VHF-Hi.

The "Leaf 50" is a standard Leaf with an amplifier. The standard Leaf has no VHF elements. I took one apart when they first came out...

Since we're on the subject, Mohu changed the "Jolt" amplifier earlier this year. I lab-tested one of their originals (black metal case) last summer and found it to be a very capable amp. Their new one (white cylindrical plastic) is less than half the price and is very, very different. So far, I can't see any good reason for a customer to own one if they can still get the old one.

That reminds me of the Radio Shack indoor UHF antenna I had decades ago, but without the reflector.

The NBC comes in great as well as the CBS honestly. Just not that PBS and ABC in the yellow. The 50 is supposed to be able to pick up VHF though not rated as being the greatest thing in that department.

Mine does have the cylindrical white amp. I picked it up from Amazon so apparently that's what's shipping now.

Yeah, they changed it this spring from what I can tell.

I'm perfectly willing to go outside with the antenna. I just hadn't gone there yet. If I can find the right setup I would have no problem mounting the outside of the house.

Above the Peaks of the Roofs of the house and gararge and any other building/s in such a manner that reception is not , obstructed , impeded , blocked , by the , attics , roofs , buildings , in the directions of , North West , West , South West , South , East.

Here is how to aim antennas.

Use a Real and Actual magnetic compass to aim antenna , do not trust a , cell phone , tablet and etc. compass.

Most Digital Tv's have a Signal Strength Meter and some Digital Tv's also have a Signal Quality Meter.

The following information is important.

As always , trees and tree leaves , plants and plant leaves , have a Negative Effect on Broadcast Tv Reception and so do buildings and other obstructions including your own , attics , roofs , buildings , in the directions of reception.

Some and not all Negative Effects are.

Absorbing Blocking Reception.

Multi-Path Reflecting Tv Signals Bouncing All Around.

The Best Practice for Reliable Reception is to install the antenna at a location that has the least amount to no amount of obstructions of any type or kind in the directions of reception including your own , attics , roofs , buildings , in the directions of reception.

If a better location of reception means that the antenna will be installed at some other location after the Test of reception on the roof then move the antenna after the Test of reception on the roof.

Here are some above the roof antenna mounts.

You live north-ish of me.

ABC virtual 27, real 10, WHTM, may be a changing station to get, see http://forum.tvfool.com/showthread.php?t=14736 It still having a 2 edge path at 60 feet means the path is very “edgy” at 16 feet. So a Y10-7-13 is probably called for to reliably get WHTM.
The terrain in that area does not play nice with reception. I would take the noise margin and power signal values on that plot with a grain of salt; anything on your TV fool plot that say 2 edge path is suspect because the model may not have accounted for terrain to reflect the real world.

Because of the 2edge path to WHTM even at 60’, and the 2edge path to Philadelphia at 60’, and the terrain between your reception location and transmitters, the best people on forums can do is make recommendations for what may work.

If you want KYW, CBS from Philadelphia, your best bet would be a high gain antenna, such as the db8e as high as you can get it, with the lowest noise high signal tolerant preamp you can get, such as the 10G201.
