I'm not crazy about listing my physical address on the web,
I'm not either. You have already given us enough info to know that you probably live SE of Utica, near Litchfield. A tvfool report for you would look something like this:
http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...e1c6ab563d51bd

That link is the one in bold type near the top of the report. Just before it you will see "If you would like to share these results with others, this page can be referenced as:" At the top of the posting box, you will see an icon with a chain link. If you hover your cursor near it you will see the flag "Insert Link." Click on that, and copy and paste the link into the box. If you still have trouble, just copy and paste the link into the text box; we can then make it an active link.

For your protection, if you enter your exact address, it will not show on your report and will just say "exact address." If you enter coordinates, the numbers at the end will be blocked out.

In order for us to give you good answers, we need a good tvfool report from you, just like the posting rules say.

The wires coming from the antena are 2 wires in a plastic coating. They are spaced about 1/4" apart. Can this still be used?

and to make this connection?
A balun is also called a 4:1 matching transformer because it connects an older antenna with two wires like yours to the 300 ohm terminals on the balun. The coax to your TV connects to the 75 ohm connector on the balun. Note that the ratio between 300 and 75 ohms is 4:1. It looks like this:

If you are having trouble generating your tvfool signal report in the first place, and you are using the interactive maps feature, just click on the Make Radar Plot >> button at the upper right corner of the map.

The term "balun" is a contraction of BALanced-to-UNbalanced. The 300 ohm port is balanced because it has two wires, neither of which is grounded; the 75 ohm coax port is unbalanced because the coax shield grounded.

Please let us know if adding the balun to the old antenna for your workshop makes it work.

Best regards,
rabbit
