antenna recommendation

Hello all, I am attempting to increase my reception over my little antenna from monoprice. I am currently able to pick up around 4 channels. Based on the tvfool info, could you suggest an appropriate setup? I really don't need the channels to the west. Primarily looking to pick up major channels fed to one or possibly two TVs, thanks! Antenna will be mounted to a mast 20ft above ground.

A Simple reception situation.

Install a Antenna Craft CS600 antenna aimed at about 5 degree magnetic compass.

Also install a Antenna Craft U4000 UHF antenna aimed at about 85 degree magnetic compass.
On the U4000 antenna lift the clips that hold the metal reflector Rods in the horizontal position and turn the reflector Rods to the vertical position.
This gets the reflector Rods out of the way so the U4000 will receive at the front of the antenna and the back of the antenna.

The >< shaped metal receiving elements are in the horizontal position not turned , it is the metal - Rods - behind the >< shaped metal reception elements.

Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html.

Connect the CS600 and U4000 together with a UVSJ = UHF/VHF Separator/Joiner. Type UVSJ in the solidsignal search box.

A amplifier is not required for one or two Tv's connected.

For 1 Tv connected use No splitter.

For 2 Tv's connected use a 2 way splitter.

Tv antennas like elbow room.

Tv antennas receive the best when nothing is reducing and blocking reception like , trees , aiming the antenna in to the roof , other buildings and etc.

Install the antennas above the roof , the antennas can mounted on the same mast pipe , the CS600 on the bottom the U4000 on the top , separate the 2 antennas about 2 feet or so.

Here are some above the roof antenna mounts , http://www.ronard.com/909911.html , http://www.ronard.com/34424560.html , http://www.ronard.com/ychim.html , http://www.ronard.com.

Buy the ronard antenna mounts at solidsignal by typing the word ronard in the solidsignal search box.

Here some places to buy antennas and etc. , http://www.antennacraft.net , http://www.solidsignal.com , http://www.amazon.com.

The Tv/s Must scan for the Broadcast Tv Channels sometimes named the 'Air Channels' or 'Antenna Channels' in the Tv setup menu because the Tv transmissions travel through the air from the transmitting antenna to the receiving antenna.

DO NOT scan for cable tv channels.

I believe the signal from KCWX (CW network), real channel 5 is receivable. When I run the numbers though, the CS600 with no amplifier, UVSJ, cables and splitter starts to look like it barely gets the job done.

25.6 dB (NM in the air) - 14 dB (Low-VHF Noise Correction Factor) + 2.3 dBd (Antenna Gain) - 7 dB (Cable, Splitter & UVSJ Loss) - (6 dB Tuner NF) = Net NM of 0.9 dB.

A Net NM under 10 dB is begging for drop outs and loss of signal.

You'll get more reliable results if you opt for a larger Low-VHF antenna such as the Winegard YA-6260. On paper, adding a low noise preamp such as the Antennas Direct CPA-19 improves the situation as well. IMO, using the YA-6260 and CPA-19 would be prudent. Using both 'upgrades' pushes the Net NM up over 15 dB.

Hi Electron and GroundUrMast, thank you for the response and great info. I will be purchasing the u4000 for the uhf. Can I get away with something a bit more compact as that VHF rig is HUGE! Edit- I might ditch the VHF channels. I didn't realize they were so enormous. Might be too much of an eyesore for the neighbors.

Install the CS600 and U4000.

And try reception with and without a Antennas Direct CPA-19 preamp.

http://www.antennasdirect.com.

With the CS600 mounted higher then the 15 feet of the tvfool radar report.

Above the roof the , KCWX channel 5 will be a much stronger signal.

Try reception with and without the CPA-19 preamplifier.
