Satellite Internet antenna near OTA TV Antenna

I’m getting HughesNet satellite internet installed next week. The best location for the satellite internet antenna is at the base of my OTA TV antenna. There’s already an unused RG6 downlead and proper grounding installed, in addition to a clear view of the south for reception. A Convenient location.

My question is: Since satellite internet antennas also transmit a signal, do I run the risk of creating OTA TV reception interference for my TV antenna?

My Current setup: OTA TV antenna is mounted on a twelve foot mast atop a sturdy rooftop tripod. The OTA TV antenna is aimed to the East, 25-30 miles away from the broadcast transmitters, so I’m on the fringe. I currently get Great OTA reception. The parabolic Satellite Internet antenna will be mounted on or near my OTA antenna tripod, approximately ten feet below my OTA antenna. It will be aimed to the South.

It's unlikely to be a concern. Hughesnet uses Ka-band frequencies for their uplink transmissions, far beyond the frequency range of OTA.

Greetings,

The frequencies used for OTA television and Satellite Internet are
very different. I would not expect any interference between the
two. I would mount the satellite dish as far away as possible from
your antenna system. Those dishes can change OTA reception
patterns and cause changes to reception.

Thank you for the input, JoeAZ and AVTech!
Sounds like there’s no concern for frequency interference.

JoeAZ, I’m curious, when you say that the satellite dish antenna can change OTA reception patterns, is that simply due to the physical shape of the parabolic dish? It’ll be aimed 90 degrees from the direction that the OTA antenna is aimed; maybe that’ll reduce the physical effect?.

Nothing to do with the shape but rather any metal or solid
objects near the antenna can cause changes in reception.
It's not likely but you never know..............

I was mainly concerned about the transmitter causing problems, but it sounds like I’m good since the frequencies are so different.

I hadn’t considered the possibility of its physical presence affecting the OTA reception. Thanks for pointing that out. It’ll be mindful of that when we’re up there installing it. If it appears that I’ll be a problem in that location, I’ll move it to location B.

Thank you again, to both of you!

Before you drill a single hole, I'd suggest you: have someone hold
the antenna where you hope to install, pointing the antenna in
the proper direction. Run a RG6 cable directly to ONE tv and see
if you get all your channels. If not, the person needs to move around
the roof and you need to perform scans to determine your best antenna
location. By the way, what is your zip code???
Be careful on the roof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you JoeAZ... all very sound advice!

A Pro installer is installing the system, with my direct supervision and assistance. (he’s going to LOVE that, I’m sure) I’ll have him hold the antenna as I check the OTA reception.

My zip is 48189. We just got some snow last night. If the conditions look even remotely treacherous I’ll just reschedule. I’m in no real hurry.

The installer should have some kind of hand held or similar
signal meter to use on the roof to determine the best antenna
location. Looks like Detroit/Windsor and Toledo are your
best signals from the Ann Arbor area. Do you know what brand
/type of antenna(s) is planned to be used???

Actually, my OTA antenna and system have been up and running for years. No problem with that system at all.

All I am doing is adding satellite internet service and am placing the HughesNet dish near/below my OTA antenna.

My OTA setup works so well, I just don’t want to mess that up by installing the HughesNet dish too close.

Unless the dish is going to be placed in 1) the OTA signals' Fresnel zone or 2) where the OTA signals will reflect off the dish and hit the antenna's reception zone, the dish will have no effect on your OTA reception.

HughesNet Satellite Internet antenna installed and running great!

I was careful to keep it out of the Fresnel Zone (thank you ADTech). I had the installer hold it in the proposed location before drilling while I checked OTA reception (thank you JoeAZ). The installer was super cool about it (thank you installer). The location is perfect and it has not affected my OTA reception at all.

Another TVFool Forum success story... Thank you everyone for your input!
