Fm Noise?????

I have a wingard hd8200u, with a preamp ap8275. I live on Long Island on a hill at an elevation of 300' with the antenna 30' above the ground. Its 501 miles form the empire state building where the major networks emit from. I can barely get any signals from the set up with the preamp unplugged and none with it on. I thought the preamp was bad, so I purchased a channel master cm7777, with the same results. I try both with the FM trap on and off. I am surrounded by a few 50' broadcast antenna's. Do i have too much FM noise to use a preamp? I need help to improve my reception. Thanks!

One thing first - unplugging a preamp turns it into an attenuator, that is it will block signal instead of amplifying. To really test a "without amp" setup, the preamp must be completely removed from the cable between antenna and TV. Do that and tell us what happenes (along with all the other stuff normally asked for.)
