Antenna reception report for Moncton, NB (Winegard Freevision FV-HD30)

TVFool: http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...de657070b90959
(Note that CBC is the only local channel still transmitting in analog.)

- Antenna: http://www.winegard.com/freevision/index.php
- Antenna height: 11ft on j-mount/mast
- Antenna azimuth: ~180 degrees true
- 2ft away from building wall. Wall faces west.
- Around 30ft of RG-6 cable, one barrel coupler
- No tall buildings obstructing line-of-sight to transmission towers
- Tested on a partly overcast day. Light winds.

Signal strength on 32" Sharp Aquos:

11 CBAFT-DT (Radio Canada) 94%
27 CIHF-DT (Global) 74%
29 CKCW-DT (CTV) 74%
Analog CBC on channel 7 comes in quite clear. A bit of fuzz and ghosting though.

As a reference, I start to see artifacts when the signal strength drops below 65%.

I hope this helps others make a decision on their antenna setups.

EDIT: Some more info:

- Antenna installed on appartment building's front entrance awning, so it needs to look discrete
- CBC analog channel 7 will go off-air this summer/fall

EDIT (16-May-2012):
Today is a rainy overcast day. The signal strength for 29 CKCW-DT is down to 71%, with no apparent loss in picture quality.

Tv antennas and Tv reception

Mounting the antenna above the roof would give a little extra signal strength , Other then that you gotem all without going to 300 feet or higher antenna height.

You have a difficult location. A larger all channel antenna with amplifier and a rotor would make a world of difference. Look at the Winegard High VHF/UHF models at www.solidsignals.com.

I appreciate the suggestions, but I should have stated in my report that I live at an apartment building, so whatever antenna I put up should be discrete. The FV-HD30 was no bigger than the small abandoned sattelite dish it replaced on the front entrance awning (I re-used the same j-mount). I only needed to borrow a 10ft ladder to do the job myself.

I already get all 4 Canadian locals channels with no picture quality issues. I'm not too worried about the minor issues with analog channel 7 (CBC), because it will go off-air this summer or fall. It would be nice to be able to pull in CBC digital from Charlottetown (channel 13, 70 miles), but I'm afraid that's not feasible for my apartment-dwelling situation.

The OTA signal will be split and fed into my PC-based PVR, so a rotor would be undesirable.

Do you guys feel the 10% signal strength margin is not enough?

The 10% signal strength margin is fine.
