VHF dipole cross

Wondering if a VHF dipole cross is a viable design. To explain, a dipole has a front/back reception pattern with nulls at +/- 90 degrees from boresight. If you had two dipoles, one oriented 90 degrees offset from the other, would you have a viable omnidirectional VHF antenna, assuming the stations were distant enough to not overrun the edges of the nulls?
