Antenna help and recommendations - Ajax, ON

Hi everyone,

New to the site, and relatively new to antennas as well. The last one I used was at my grandparent's place a million years ago, with foil on the ends of the rabbit ears. The time has come to ditch the overpriced cable.

I've been trying to do my own research, and all I'm doing is getting confused with all of the different antennae out there. I searched the site, and found someone with the same questions who lived in Ajax, but that was I think around 4 years ago or so.

Ideally, I'd like to put an antenna in the attic. If that's not possible to fulfill what I'm trying to accomplish, I'm not against sticking something on the roof (it'll just have to wait until spring).

I'm in Ajax, ON, about 20 miles east of Toronto. Two story house, so the attic is maybe 25'. Roof, maybe 30' since I can't even stand up when I'm up there.

Here is my location:

I don't think getting Toronto channels will be any issue, but I'd really really like my Buffalo channels (at least WGRZ) to see the hometown news.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Assuming you have asphalt shingles on the south side of your roof, you could try a DB8e or CM4228 in your attic aimed at 174 magnetic. Try it without a splitter and preamp first. If you're having trouble picking WGRZ up, you can try adding a preamp. I pick up a station (15 db noise margin) with a 10db gain antenna in my attic, but I needed to add an RCA PRAMP1R to stabilise the signal.

If it still doesn't work with a preamp, put it on the roof in the spring.

Thanks for the information and recommendations! South side is a single layer of asphalt. Going to order either of those antennas (not sure which one yet) and see how it goes.

I found a nice void running from the attic to the basement to tie it into where the existing cable enters the house.

Now where'd I put my compass?
