rooftop install new HDTV antenna and old VHF antenna for FM

I cut cable a while back and mostly do internet tv (have my house wired Cat6 as well as wireless so all set there).

I was thinking about getting a HDTV antenna to put in attic for NBC etc. I don't mind paying a bit extra as one time expense for hardware so price difference not a determining factor. Was looking at Orca-AX series with the rotors etc and also the winegard 7696.

I think I have quite good coverage overall:
http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...99000473161527

I have a very old VHF antenna in my attic from previous owners which I never used. It's HUGE... I also listen to FM radio a lot and don't get reception in my basement so was thinking about converting that to an FM radio antenna while I get a new antenna for DTV .

I am tech savvy but no experience with antennas.

I have broadly for questions:
(1) which antenna should I go with?
(2) amplifier or not (read up on the cons of amplifier if signal is already good)
(3) rotor or not? Is there a downside of getting rotor?
(4) will the VHF antenna used for FM interfere with the other one for TV if they are both in the attic? I have room up there (i think) and will be using separate cables.
.
Thanks very much

DTV/cell phone reception advise

Use a Winegard HD 7082P all channel antenna, aimed to 103 degrees. If your home has a standard shingle roof, that is all you need. No rotor, no pre-amplifier. If you are hooking up more than 3 or 4 sets you could use a distribution amp.

There will be no interferrence from the FM antenna. It only receives, does not transmit.

Thank you very much. Standard shingles so that sounds good. It seems you choose the model because it still covers 35 miles on UHF and gives mevery good VHF, is that accurate?
I am Ok finding the compass direction, just was wondering if the "fat" or "thin" part of the antenna needs to point to 103 (and the other pointing at 283) or does it even matter?

Also to connect my old VHF to my tuner can I also use Rg6 cable (tried looking up but couldn't find specific answer, maybe this is too basic of a question

Thanks again.

Install a HD7082P antenna above the roof aimed at about 103 degree magnetic compass.
Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html.

Here are some Strong and Sturdy antenna mounts , http://www.ronard.com/909911.html , http://www.ronard.com/34424560.html , http://www.ronard.com/ychim.html , http://www.ronard.com.

Buy the ronard antenna mounts at solidsignal by typing the word ronard in the solidsignal search box.

Here are some but not all places to buy antennas and etc. http://www.solidsignal.com , http://www.winegarddirect.com , http://www.amazon.com.

For one Tv connected use no splitter.

For 2 Tv's connected use a 2 way splitter.

For 3 or 4 Tv's connected use a Channel Master CM3414 distribution amplifier.

The thin end of the antenna is the front.

I see a recommendation to mount on the roof. That would produce a better fade margin and is always better, but if not possible the attic should work fine. You should receive the same channels.

I installed the antenna and got this all working. I got really clear reception on most channels except for WNBC, which of course is where the Olympics are!

That one alternates from Crystal clear to no signal..
Pretty much all other 38 are looking good otherwise. Is it my luck?

Is the HD7082P antenna installed??

Is the antenna aimed at about 103 degree magnetic compass??

Adjust the aim of the antenna for better reception of WNBC NBC.

Here is how to aim antennas , http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html.

Is the HD7082P in the attic or above the roof??

If the HD7082P antenna is in the attic is the HD7082P close to the other antenna??

Is the HD7082P connected to the other antenna??

Is the HD7082P antenna being used as a FM radio antenna also??

How many Tv's are connected??

Experimentation has revealed that location is more important than angle, type of antenna and everything else combined! My old VHF antenna gets perfect reception for WNBC in its old place! And it's HD and its pointed not in the ideal angle...

It's close to the house walls maybe that's why but I don't get how a 20+ hear old VHF antenna is outperforming my brand new UHF antenna for DTV.. maybe they had optimized location when that was installed?

They are both in attic and separate.
Only one is connected to one TV directly with no splits.

So far I find that the VHF antenna is overall better though for some weak channels the UHF does better...
I pointed the winegard to 103 magnetic degrees whereas the old antenna is quite a bit off from that.

The antenna are separated by about 15 feet.

Interesting...

The HD7082P is a antenna that receives all 3 Tv bands , VHF low 2 thru 6 , VHF high 7 thru 13 , UHF 14 thru 51.

It is not just a UHF antenna.

As always the starting aim direction is --> the starting aim direction.

103 is the starting aim direction.

The aim of the antenna is then adjusted for best reception.

Also reception will be improved by moving the antenna above the roof.

Antennas receive the best when there is nothing in the way of reception.

Thank you. I was saying though my really old VHF antenna is doing a great job in receiving UHF signal, better than the HD7082p in some cases, but yes I will go up there and tweak it around more today to optimize.
