You're right, amplifiers are for pushing a signal through the loss of cable and splitters. They don't 'pull' signal out of the air or an antenna.
Given the trees, a Winegard HD7698P or the 'big guns' (an Antennas Direct 91XG and Antennacraft Y10713) are not overkill IMO. If you have more than 50' of coax between the antenna(s) and the TV, add an RCA TVPRAMP1R preamplifier. If mounting outdoors, below tree top level leaves you with unreliable reception, you'll need to consider options that would put the antenna(s) safely above tree top height.

If the well is dry and you don't see rain on the horizon, you'll need to dig the hole deeper. (If the antenna can't get the job done, an amp won't fix it.)
